(With a few extra-cinematic exceptions, cutscenes use overworld character models and animations, so theoretically there wouldn't be any problem transitioning smoothly into and out of cutscenes.) If they had the camera swoop from the angle used for gameplay straight to the one used in the cutscene, while the first line of dialogue is appearing, the player won't feel like the game is shutting down Gameplay Mode and starting up Cutscene Mode. Realistically, the camera and characters should be able to move while dialogue is happening, but more often than not that isn't how it goes.Ī related problem is that Gen VII's cutscenes break the flow of gameplay, which I think can be attributed largely to the fact that the camera does a dip to black (fade out, fade in) at the start and end of a lot of cutscenes. In older games the camera and character movements weren't there, so Gen VII's change in pacing is very conspicuous. Say a line and wait for the button press, then camera moves, then walk here, then turn, then say next line. The problem with the newer, more dynamic cutscene animation engine is that it rarely allows more than one thing to animate at a time. Which is to say, previous gens didn't animate much of anything apart from characters walking. Gen VII uses a vastly different system for animation in its cutscenes compared to previous gens.

But if people keep complaining about "tutorials", GF might end up worrying about tutorials instead of addressing the thing that's actually behind the complaints.

It is a tutorial when Kukui shows you how to catch Pokémon and use Z-Moves, and when you're taught how to ride Mantine other than those, there are almost no significant tutorial segments in the game. It's not a tutorial when Sina and Dexio introduce themselves. It's not a tutorial when Colress tells you why he's in Alola. No, it's not a tutorial when Lillie talks about Nebby again. Better than I expected, but still not great. Hey, looks like we've reached roughly 60% for people who know what the heck a tutorial is. Rotom is overall the worst.Ĭtrl-F "cutscene" – 17 results on this page I hope it gets less hand hold at the end but man this is frustrating. I understand they're reaching to their younger demographic with this but god I wish there were options to turn some of this off.

I would have loved this as a starting Pokémon game first getting into the series but now it's frustrating being walked through the whole game and can't explore the goddamn island until I talk to professed kakui 18 times. But this game is waaaaay to much hand holding. I like the super effective options next to your moves after you already fought a Pokémon cause I always forget types. Rotom constantly fucking talking so you can't look at the map, and the check points to show you where your next cutscene is a little much. Fuck it's hard to play it for more than an hour at a time. In alpha sapphire I loved the games pacing as I felt able to do what I want when I want and I haven't beat the elite four yet as I just wanted to breed shineys for a bit. Or I'd be 10-20 levels above the gyms, fly through them, then somehow still have to grind and struggle through the elite four. Pokémon diamond and pearl as a kid I got lost in or stuck and couldn't figure out what the fuck to do.
